As the scorching summer heat continues to bake the city, many are flocking to a popular cooling-off spot at 38 Sipailou in Shangcheng District. Inside this natural air-conditioned haven at a comfortable 25°C, locals are enjoying an unexpectedly delightful retreat.

This year, Hangzhou’s largest and most bustling civil air defense shelter has gotten even better. Beyond its 300-person capacity cooling area, the space now features eight unique zones - like a national defense experience center, a wartime-themed cinema, a recreation court, a shared library, and a nostalgic “time tunnel.” Free Wi-Fi and drinking water are available, with staff and volunteers on hand to assist. The shelter is hosting a photo exhibition called “Pillar of National Strengths”, showcasing the Communist Party of China’s role during the Anti-Japanese War. It’s a chance for visitors to reflect on history and remember their responsibilities.
