Zhejiang Provincial Forestry Bureau has released its list of new provincial important wetlands for 2025, with Lin’an’s Qingshan Lake, the city’s first and only, on the list. Now Hangzhou boasts one international important wetland, seven province-level wetlands, and three city-level ones.

Qingshan Lake Wetland, located within the area of Qingshan Lake National Forest Park, spans an area of 723.22 hectares. Known as “Green Fairyland,” it plays a crucial role for supporting the area’s biodiversity. Its pristine environment serves as a vital stopover and habitat for migratory birds and various rare wild plants and animals. Surveys indicate the existence of 1,248 floral species and 1,613 animal species around. Among these, 62 are our nation’s protected species, including the White Crane, Oriental Stork, and Scaly-sided Merganser. The wetland is a prime site for bird-watching and a provincial hub for public science education.

Hangzhou has taken steps ahead to make itself a metropolitan wetland city, such as the enactment of “Hangzhou Wetland Protection Regulations,” the establishment of the province’s first city-owned wetland protection association, the development of several high-quality “wetland plus” projects, and the launch of the country’s only pilot project for digitizing internationally important wetlands. The city, certified as “an international wetland city,” also has an established urban system for comprehensive wetland protection.
