The game character “Wukong” last year was a hit worthy of the global attention. Another “Wukong” statue was erected in Wensan Digital Life Zone on Jan. 15, drawing the attention of numerous morning joggers and passersby.

Standing five meters tall, this “Wukong” has a steel frame coated with fallen leaves, draped in a cloak, and shouldering a golden cudgel. It looks like a mighty hero. Jointly sponsored by the city’s Administrative Law Enforcement Bureau and China Academy of Fine Art, the figure is titled “Wukong: Presence.” The name and shape just come from the astounding “Black Myth: Wukong,” a game that represents Hangzhou’s prosperity in digital technology and cultural production. The game was a significant cultural success in 2024.

The statue is also an epitome of the city’s universal landscape of golden leaves on the streets. In November and December last year, Hangzhou introduced a “no sweeping” policy on 44 roads (lanes) and riverside paths, alongside an “A Glance of Autumn” photo contest that attracted over 200 citizens and tourists.

“We try to make the Academy’s Golden Leaves Art Festival a citywide event. That’s quite a new idea. The facilities for collecting and shaping the fallen leaves at Nanshan Road, Deshou Palace, and Xianghu Lake are working well, and people really love and appreciate it,” said an official from the Comprehensive Administrative Law Enforcement Bureau.

The statue will remain on display on the road until leaves naturally fall off, and it will be removed afterwards.
