On October 24th, Gongshu District hosted its 4th Track and Field Games for Primary and Secondary Schools. This year’s event was the largest yet, featuring 70 events and attracting over 1,400 athletes.

The opening ceremony was a dazzling display of athletic skills, featuring hockey, floorball, roller skating, gymnastics, and other technical sports. A primary school principal remarked, “These aren’t just for show; they’re part of our regular extracurricular activities.”

In recent years, Gongshu District has been at the forefront of promoting emerging sports in local schools. This initiative has cultivated a wealth of young athletic talent, leading to impressive results in various competitions. For instance, hockey has taken off in the district, with 15 schools implementing pilot programs for the sport. The district’s youth hockey team recently secured second place in the U10 group at the National Youth Hockey Championship this past August.

In addition to promoting niche sports, Gongshu District is dedicated to enhancing students’ overall fitness through physical activity. The district’s 100-Minute School-Based Sports Campaign ensures that primary and secondary students get at least 100 minutes of daily outdoor exercise, including physical activity during extended breaks, physical education classes, and extracurricular programs.

A representative from the district’s Education Bureau stated, “The Track and Field Games plays an important role in our effort to integrate sports into our education system. Moving forward, Gongshu District will continue to improve its school-based sports promotion model and the underlying theoretical framework.”
