On 16 July, “Drawn to the Stage: The Art World of Guan Liang” opened at the Zhejiang Art Museum. Curated specially to mark the 40th anniversary of Guan Liang’s passing, the exhibition shines a spotlight on his trailblazing role as the originator of modern Chinese operatic figure painting. Organized into three thematic sections—Capturing Spirit and Emotion, Truth Through Simplicity, and Brushwork in Dialogue with Opera—the show brings together 139 works (including sketches, manuscripts, archival materials, and finished pieces depicting a wide range of operatic genres), offering a complete journey through Guan’s creative process, from life drawing and careful refinement to final execution. Throughout the exhibition run, the museum will also host a line-up of side events, including pop-up performances by opera masters, academic lectures, and expert-led gallery talks, weaving a deeper connection between the art of the brush and the aesthetics of the pear-blossom stage.
