These days, the “Star Osmanthus” tree at Hangzhou Children’s Park has begun to show its first few blossoms—tiny golden clusters peeking through the green leaves, carrying the very first whisper of autumn to the city.

This year’s osmanthus flowers have arrived a little earlier than usual, and behind the early bloom lies a fascinating natural secret: what locals call “steaming osmanthus” weather. This isn’t a dish—it’s a specific set of conditions that osmanthus trees love: cool mornings and evenings, warm afternoons, and just the right amount of moisture in the air. Ideally, daytime temperatures hover above 30°C with plenty of sunlight, nighttime temperatures dip below 18°C, and humidity stays between 75% and 85%. Recently, Hangzhou’s weather has been checking all those boxes.

But temperature and humidity aren’t the whole story—water plays a key role too. Osmanthus trees need plenty of water during their flowering period, but they hate waterlogged roots. Last week’s rain from Typhoon “White Dolphin” gave the soil a good soaking and boosted the surrounding humidity, acting like a natural “bloom trigger” for the Star Osmanthus.

And of course, the flowers owe a debt of gratitude to the dedicated groundskeepers. Park staff regularly loosen the soil around the tree’s root zone to keep it aerated and prevent waterlogging, while also applying foliar fertilizer to ensure the tree has all the nutrients it needs to greet the season in peak health.

A gentle reminder to visitors: the Star Osmanthus hasn’t quite entered its full early-bloom stage yet. If you're hoping to fully immerse yourself in the sight and scent of osmanthus blossoms, you'll need to hold on just a little longer.
