Kids in Hangzhou and Ganzi are building a pretty special friendship—one handwritten letter at a time. In a heartwarming pen-pal exchange, 113 young pioneers from Baiyu County’s No. 3 Primary School in Ganzi Autonomous Prefecture teamed up with two schools in Hangzhou’s Lin’an District: Yuyan Town No. 2 Primary School and the Communication University of China-affiliated Lin’an Primary School. What came out of it? A bridge of friendship built with little more than paper, pencils, and a whole lot of heart.

“We’re miles apart, but I’d really love to be your friend.” That note, sent from the watery landscapes of Jiang’nan, hit the snowy plateau like a burst of sunshine. The classroom in Baiyu quickly buzzed with excitement as kids carefully opened their envelopes like treasure chests. Inside, their new pals in Lin’an painted vivid pictures—gentle rivers and lush green fields, plus everyday school adventures. Reading together in their little groups, the kids on the plateau suddenly got a window into a world more than a thousand kilometers away.

Warmth soaked into every word, and friendship grew between the lines. Guided by their teachers, the kids in Baiyu couldn’t wait to write back. You could hear a pin drop—just the soft scratch of pens on paper, each child pouring out their truest feelings and best memories of home. One described the soaring snow-capped mountains and vast grasslands. Another wrote about the joy of traditional Tibetan festivals. Some even sketched adorable yaks and colorful flower fields. “Come visit Baiyu,” wrote a student named Zeren Bamu. “I’ll take you up a snowy mountain to see the most beautiful stars.”

More than just a pen-pal project, this cross-country exchange shows how education support is quietly transforming young lives in Zhejiang and Ganz—bringing kids together, bridging cultures, and building connections that matter. But it is also something bigger: a living, breathing lesson in ethnic unity. These letters are planting seeds of understanding and friendship that people hope to keep growing. And their plan? Double down on programs like this, so the friendship keep blooming—mile after mile, heart after heart.
