As lights glow at dusk, the open space in front of the Drum Tower Plaza naturally becomes a stage with twinkling lights - a “Summer Night Concert” is in full swing. The live band kicks off with passionate vocals, the singer’s infectious voice blending with guitar riffs and drumbeats, instantly igniting the crowds. People sway gently to the music, spontaneously forming a semicircle full of songs and laughter against the ancient walls - they’ve pushed the festive atmosphere to its peak.
The “Long Summer” 2025 Qinghefang’s Summer Nights was officially launched last weekend. The event series, themed “Back to ‘Slow Pace of Living’,” aim to create a leisure platform blending traditions and modern vibrancy through poetry, music, opera, and parades - stuffing the summer nights with a vibe of coziness.
The Drum Tower also saw a white screen unfolding against the old wall - this is “Drum Tower Film Night”, a cinematic event steeped in nostalgia. The further you go, the more you’ll have understood the charm of summer and its nights. Along Qinghefang’s bluestone-paved lanes, you might stumble upon a flash mob on poetry - graceful verses on summer days, “slowness,” and clean rivers have appeared on street corners, prompting passersby to pause and murmur the beautiful words. The alleys are also being brought to life by heritage lantern parades, African drum shows, and traditional Chinese dances.
The ingenious “ice-wall” at the Drum Tower Plaza is also a cool-down for both eyes and mindsets.
Over the past two years, Qinghefang has been a place to stage over 300 cultural events and trendy performances annually - an epitome of how “slow pace of living” is widely believed here. Such a diverse, distinctive lineup of cultural experiences makes Qinghefang always an old-time block filled with historical magnificence, and helps spice up the city’s cultural tourism in many more years to come.
