Autumn in Hangzhou is the most enchanting season of the year. This is a time when heat starts to fade away and chill has yet arrived - lakeside plane trees are dressed in gold, and the fragrance of osmanthus fills the air. West Lake in autumn looks like a spilled palette, captivating all who visit. As the National Day holiday is approaching, it’s time for a spontaneous “autumn trip.”

Beishan, a famous historical street in Hangzhou and a gateway to West Lake culture, is known as the “open-air museum of modern architectures.” The tall, lush plane trees lining the street stand as guardians, creating a unique landscape where golden leaves exude a vibe of warmth and tranquility. Along the Beishan Street commands a serene scene of shimmering waters and sky, breathed with breeze gently sweeping across the lake.

Baoshi Hill by the West Lake is home to attractions such as Baochu Pagoda, Chuyang Terrace, Baopu Taoist Temple, and Yellow Dragon Cave. Known as one of the “Ten New Views of West Lake,” Baoshi Hill is celebrated for its grotesque rocks and the stunning sight of “Gem Hill Floating in Sunset Glow.” At dawn, the hill and Baochu Pagoda form a picturesque mix against the sunlight. Many visitors hike here to enjoy a panoramic view of West Lake’s beauty.

Yanggong Causeway, roughly parallel to Su Causeway, was built by Yang Mengying, the mayor of Hangzhou during the Ming Dynasty. It is characterized by its forests and wetlands, with a rich variety of deciduous trees. Compared to the bustling Su Causeway and Bai Causeway, Yanggong Causeway is faraway. Metasequoias, red maples, and plane trees are layered and reflected in the water. Taking a West Lake bus ride along Yanggong Causeway feels like being a passenger of an “roller coaster” - a thrill exclusive to this golden time.

Xiling Bridge lies on the western side of West Lake, flanked by maple and cypress trees. As autumn arrives, the frost and the mist shine with crimson and violet hues upon the leaves. Bathed in the setting sun, their reflections take on an intoxicating radiance, creating a dazzling spectacle. This spot offers a serene retreat for appreciating autumn on West Lake. As early as the Ming Dynasty, Gao Lian recorded in his book Record of Serene Delights in Four Seasons the elegant autumn pastime of “the enchantment of the red leaves at Xiling Bridge.”

Hangzhou’s autumn is short yet brilliant. With the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays approaching, planning your trip in advance will ensure you not to miss out on this golden, colorful season.
