“A brush in uninterruptible moves speaks joys and sorrows, and a fleeting life across vast mountains and waters…” - This is “Fuchun Ode,” an immersive new Yue Opera staged by Fuyang’s Yue Opera Academy. The program was premiered successfully at the former reclusive residence of Huang Gongwang.

Three years in the making, “Fuchun Ode” was prepared by an all-star panel of artists - It is directed by Weng Guosheng, winner of the Plum Blossom Awards and Culture Awards. The play was curated by Luo Zhou, a Cao Yu Drama Awards winner, and contributed by Yu Sihan, a Lao She Youth Theatre Literature Awards winner. Renowned composers Dong Dong and Chen Jun took the vocal design. “Fuchun Ode” comprises six chapters - It begins with “Encounter,” then followed by “Heart Revealed,” “Prison Farewell,” “Inspirations,” “Reunion,” and concludes with “Into the Painting.” It has a romantic, poetic, and ethereal tone, seamlessly blending the landscapes of Fuchun River with the stage and performance. In July 2023, “Fuchun Ode” was staged in Hangzhou as a highlighted show for the Asian Games.

As Fuyang’s first original Yue Opera spectacle, “Fuchun Ode” incorporates the natural scenery of Huang Gongwang’s retreat. The audience stand provides a viewing experience where “people find themselves in the scenery.” It is a best practice in “opera + live show.” In a special “Qiantang Temple Fair” segment, actors distributed Fuyang-style gifts and snacks to the audience - a buzzword going viral in cyberspace for days.
