The highly-anticipated music fountain at the West Lake made a comeback at 19:30 on July 25 after closing for three years.

Built in 2003, the music fountain is a cultural landmark at the West Lake, and also one of the most prestigious and popular music fountains in China. It closed starting from January 24, 2020.

According to the West Lake Administration, the music fountain had been mostly repaired. During the three years of closure, its lightening system, cables, pumps and control devices were soaked in the lake, and many facilities and devices have been wrapped and eroded by aquatic plants, and got aged and malfunctioned quicker than those installed on the ground. In renovation, aged and broken underground cables, frequency changers, numerical control equipment, water-proof acoustic devices and lightening system have been replaced. Safety hazard had been removed.

During the trial run, the music fountain will play four songs, one more than the time before its closure. On the night of July 25, it played The Butterfly Lovers, The Magnificent Seven, The Swan Goose and Now Until the Future. The last song, the official promotion song for the 19th Asian Games, was added after taking local residents’ suggestion. The West Lake scenic spot is choreographing new songs to deliver greater music fountain experience for visitors.

Except for extreme weathers, the music fountain will play at 19:30 every day during the trial run. Later, it will run at a normal basis. For safe and orderly travel, some riverside region will be closed, and visitors can enter the core watching area for music fountain playing after security check. There are two entrances and five exits in the Riverside Road. Please do not carry restricted knives, inflammable and explosive articles like alcohol and gasoline, and corrosives when entering the watching area.
