Last year, Hangzhou Botanical Garden introduced something special for visitors: Hangzhou Academician Path, the first academician-themed path in China. This year, the Path has been widened and extended. Handprints of Xu Kuangdi, Ye Peijian, Xu Qingrui and ten other Chinese academicians in Hangzhou were added to the display along the roadside, updating the total number of academicians’ handprints to 33. Recently, the phase II upgrading project of the Path was successfully wrapped up in the aquatic plant area (rose nursery) of Hangzhou Botanical Garden.

The Hangzhou Academician Path, which hides among the soapberry trees in the rose nursery, is built to pay tribute to leading Chinese scientists and academicians from the nation’s two top research institutes, namely Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. The phase II that was completed recently is an extension of the phase I. Handprints of 13 academicians in Hangzhou were crafted into upright bronze sculptures by Zhu Bingren, a Chinese arts and crafts master. The sculptures stand among the soapberry trees. Each is 1.2 meters high, 0.6 meter long and 0.4 meter wide, with a QR code next to it, which visitors could scan to access the introduction of the academician.

The project of Hangzhou Academician Path is co-sponsored by Hangzhou Municipal Association for Science and Technology and the West Lake Scenic Area Management Committee. The completion of the project’s phase II a year after the phase I was finished gives full expression to the value Hangzhou places on talents and tribute it pays to academicians who are dedicated to research and innovation and committed to excellence. As Du Youwei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said in his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Path, "The Hangzhou Academician Path is a path of scientific and technological innovation, a path of humanism, and above all a path of motivation that encourages the youth to dream big and work hard."
