Hangzhou, One of the Best Destinations for the New Year Holiday

China’s first public holiday in 2021 has witnessed “staycation”, namely spending the holiday by staying at home or visiting local or neighboring tourist spots with families, become the mainstream. Driven by coupons issued by governments, travel discounts and other favorable policies, reservation of local hotels and of those in nearby places during the holiday via Fliggy, Alibaba’s traveling service provider, soared year on year by over 50%, with skiing, hot spring spa and scenic spots being the top choices.


Holiday Keywords: Family Trips and Food

Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hangzhou were three top choices for tourists, with Shenzhen, Chongqing, Changsha, Nanjing, Sanya, Wuhan and Chengdu joining the top ten list.


Theme parks, historical towns and ancient Buddhist temples gained popularity. While family preferred having fun in Disney Land in Shanghai, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai and Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, others preferred making a wish in Lingyin Temple, or visiting the scenic spots like Feilai Scenic Area or the historical and cultural ones like the Ancient Town of Wuzhen and the Palace Museum. All these destinations were among the top ten list.


As the post-95s becomes the dominant tourist group, the travel industry is stretching its boundary to include a new element, food. Food becoming the new stimulator of staycation, buffet, afternoon tea, customized dinner in five-star hotels and other culinary services have seen reservation grow by 25% year on year, according to the statistics of Fliggy.


Given that the Covid-19 pandemic is yet over, another concern for visitors during the holiday was safety. Over half of the tourists went to a personal-credit-based service of Fliggy to ensure safety, which saved them from risks of infection as well as deposits and all the waiting for checking in and out. Tourist numbers were capped at 75% of scenic spots’ full capacity, and admission tickets of over two hundred scenic spots could be booked on Fliggy in advance, forestalling crowded queuing that entails infection risk. 


Warm Sanya Trumped All Other Destinations and Visitors to Macao Grew by 246%

As the cold wave swept over most parts of the country, Sanya in Hainan province at the southern tip of China, with an average temperature of 25℃, proved itself an incomparable attraction. The city led the nation in terms of hotel reservation, up year on year by over 60%, and hotel price, up year on year by over 50%. In this warm harbor people celebrated the arrival of 2021 by having fun in the hotel and in the sea and shopping to their heart’s content in duty-free stores.   


As the first outbound destination to reopen to mainland tourists, Macao is seeing its popularity steadily trending upwards since last September. As the first outbound destination where tourists can enjoy Fliggy’s travel discounts, Macao has witnessed its visitors swell by a whopping 246% compared with the 2020 National Holiday.


In terms of ways of travel, self-drive and small-sized group travels were the most popular. During the holiday, car-rental service on Fliggy grew by 82% year on year and the share of self-drive tourists in Hainan grew by over 110%, most of them favoring cars with daily rent between 100 yuan to 200 yuan. The most favorable places for self-drive tourists were Sanya and Haikou in Hainan, Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in the south-western province of Yunnan, Guangzhou in Guangdong and Chongqing, respectively a southern city and a south-western municipality.  


A Holiday Reminder for Skiers and Spa Seekers: Be Safe.

Celebrations of the arrival of 2021 showed quite a wide difference. Some preferred the excitement of skiing. Per capita spending on ski products on Fliggy increased year on year by around 55%. For southerners unable to ski in the wild of northern China, skiing locally in multiple ski resorts also turned out to be a nice alternative.


In contrast, some preferred a relaxing bath in the hot spring spa. Per capita spending in hot spring resorts on Fliggy increased by over 40% year on year. Resorts in cities of Zhuhai, Liyang, Guangzhou and Nanjing were among the most sought-after.
