No picking cards from boom gates, no opening wallets, and no cellphone tapping, you can get into and out of parking lots without pause. Alipay said Tuesday that Hangzhou’s 2,000 parking lots, or over 85% of the city’s all parking lots, are now using its automatic parking charges payment system.

To activate this payment method, users need to open the “便捷泊车 [easy parking]” mini app in the Alipay app, input their license plate numbers and allow password-free payment for the mini app. It now takes only two seconds for each car to pass the boom gates, compared to 10 seconds previously.

The parking lot at the Yintai shopping mall in Gongshu District is among the first parking lots that adopted the automatic system. The partnership with Alipay has significantly improved the efficiency for the parking lot and over 3,000 cars exit the parking lot each month via the payment system, said Lin Kangjie with the shopping mall’s planning unit.

Alipay has worked with Alibaba’s City Brain to launch the system, which provides synergy for the city to build its “digital governance” capability and improves the urban administration efficiency. Besides the automatic payment system, users can also have access to online opening of ETC card accounts, paying traffic tickets, and fuel discounts via Alipay. Over 140 Alipay users have used the above-mentioned services.

Alipay rolled out its automatic parking charges payment system first in Shanghai Hongqiao Airport in June 2017. Over 10,000 parking lots in more than 150 Chinese cities have adopted the service, including those in the airports and train stations of Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.
