Zhejiang Performing Arts Group will operate and manage Canal Theater in Gongshu District, according to an agreement the district administration with the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism signed Wednesday.

Constructions for the theater, which started in Jan 2018, will be completed in the first half of 2021. The project with an estimated worth of over CNY 100 million will be the first for the Grand Canal belt in collaboration with other provinces.

The 142-mu site is part of the phase-2 of Grand Canal Central Park, one of the ten biggest cultural projects of Gongshu. The theater has a floor area of 19,000 sq meters, and the underground area is 50,000 sq meters. The ripple-shaped theater has a 1,200 seat theater hall for operas, symphony concerts and musicals, and a 400-seat theater hall for musicals, children’s shows, meetings, and lectures.

Gongshu also held a mobilization meeting for the resumption of work amid the battle against the COVID-19 on the same day. The district will push ahead with the construction or inauguration of 100 major projects and stimulate consumption. It also vows to boost the night economy along the canal, introduce preferential policies for companies, accelerate the signing of major industrial/talent projects, improve digital empowerment for manufacturers, and realize governance modernization in grassroots administrations.

The district is also planning projects including the Grand Canal Museum, Huafeng Industrial Memory Corridor, and Xiaohe Oil Depot Relics Park. The projects are expected to become the city’s cultural sites, tourism brands, and exemplary public service projects.
