City’s Singles’ Day promotion hit 196 million packages

The city processed 196 million packages during the 10 days ended on Nov 20, up 17.4% compared to a year ago, according to Hangzhou Post Administration Bureau. 


The Singles’ Day promotion is a big test for the delivery industry’s service capacity during the peak season. Alibaba’s Tmall reported CNY 268.4 billion sales on Nov 11. Other shopping platforms such as JD, Suning and Pinduoduo also set record-high sales, which resulted in huge flow of packages. The city’s consumers received 130 million packages, up 11.1% from a year ago, and merchants sent 65.88 million packages, up 31.9%. On Nov 12, the packages received and sent peaked at 29.62 million, up 22.9%. The daily package sending record is set on Nov 11 at 24.59 million, and daily package receiving record on Nov 15 at 8.14 million. What is different from last year is the package sending remains on a high level after Nov 12, and the number was 5.2 million on Nov 20. Smart pick-up boxes have played an important role in easing the package delivery congestion, as 16.39 million packages are picked up by consumers from such boxes. 


In order to have all the packages delivered to consumers timely and safely, the city has planned meticulously. By balancing delivery for domestic and international consumers,  and urban and rural consumers, the city implemented the peak season protocols for all service providers, which has ensured the stable operation during the shopping season.
